What is Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis?

Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis or (TENs) is a more severe version of Stevens - Johnson syndrome. It likewise can be caused by several different types of drugs. Among them are the following: pain relievers, antibiotics, NSAIDS (non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs), sulfur-based drugs, Tetracycline, Amoxicillin and anti-convulsants.

TENS can be incredibly painful and cause severe mental anguish. In some cases, the patient may develop an infection which could lead to their death.

TENS may affect any age group but those who use the medications listed above, namely the elderly, are more likely to contract the disease. It is however, found in younger patients. Those with low immunities to infections and diseases such as those who have HIV or AIDS more susceptible to this disease. The elderly and those with lower immunity and the elderly are advised to be aware of the symptoms of TENS and SJS and report to their doctor if they exhibit any symptoms.
