Children and Stevens-
Johnson Syndrome (SJS)

Though causes vary, many medications tailored to children have been found to contribute to the development of SJS/TENS. Children's medication such as Advil and Children's Motrin have been linked to SJS/TENS. Motrin is under legal action currently due to a case involving a seven year old girl and the drug. After taking the medication to reduce fever, the child developed symptoms the next day and was rendered blind within two days due to SJS which was linked to Children's Motrin.

For a list of other medications linked to SJS/TENS please see the Causes of SJS section.

While the causes of the diseases may vary, it is advised that should any child exhibit the symptoms of SJS/TENS medical attention be sought immediately.

Companies that produce products that have been linked to SJS/TENS are receiving requests that warning labels be added to their medication's packaging to ensure that parents are adequately warned pertaining to the possible side effects. The Food and Drugs Administration has been requested to look into the matter.

Currently, it is advisable that parents consult with their doctors regarding possible side effects of any medication their child is currently taking; over the counter or prescribed.

Children diagnosed with SJS/TENS are treated in medical facilities. If the cause of the disease is attributed to medication, the medication is stopped immediately. Children are treated intravenously to compensate for fluid loss and their skin is left to re-grow. Antibiotics may also be administered depending on the development of an infection. Topical and oral corticosteroids may also be administered depending on the stage of the disease.

The chances of survival for those with SJS/TENS can differ quite dramatically depending on the damage incurred and the degree of the infection. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that if your child is taking medications that are linked to SJS and TENS that you be aware of the symptoms of the disease and seek immediate medical attention should he or she developed them.

Support groups are available to benefit both children and parents who have been affected by SJS/TENS. Support groups can be a valuable asset to help children and parents receive needed therapy, general support and advice.
